MEETING: We will hold the Kol haKfar annual meeting on Monday, December 19th at 7pm at Zachary Thacher's apartment (41 Grove St, Apt 4B). During the meeting we will present the annual financial report, discuss matters important to the KhK community, and accept nominations for the position of trustee and Treasurer of KhK. The one-year term of office for Ben Folkinshteyn, who has diligently served as a trustee and Treasurer for the past year, is up at the end of the year. Ben has volunteered to serve again as trustee and Treasurer for the next three-year term of office, but if anyone else would like to nominate him- or herself as trustee/Treasurer, we will accept nominations at the beginning of the meeting, and vote at the end of the meeting. All are welcome to attend, but only members can vote. We define minyan members as people who have come to at least 50% of all minyan events in the past year. HOSTS: We're still facing a crunch for hosts. Please open your home to the minyan and we'll all be very grateful! Email us to schedule a time. The minyan offers reimbursement for the main course up to $75.

Dear Kol haKfarians,

Thanks to everyone for making it a great 2011 for Kol haKfar. By year end we will have hosted 26 gatherings in members' apartments across downtown Manhattan, including branching out to Park Slope for the first time. I want to take a minute to thank our generous hosts in rough order of frequency of hosting in 2011: Carrie Kingsley, Ben and Jennie Folkinstheyn, Leora Singer, Jonathan and Malorie Schecter, Laura Nova, Jared Weinstein, David Keyes, Paul Fischer and Amanda Melpolder. A few have hosted more than 4 times; all have been gracious and welcoming. Without them, the minyan can't happen.

For us to continue into 2012 we need to bring in more homes -- and to increase the frequency of our occasional hosts -- to give a needed respite to our frequent hosts and to diversify our services. If you live south of 34th Street and north of Canal and have a home that comfortably fits 25-30 people, or know of an appropriate, free (or cheap) space that can accommodate us, please email us at kolhakfar@yahoo.com to open up your home. We're in particular need this December 16th and into the new year. As a reminder, the minyan will reimburse each host up to $75 towards costs for providing a main course. All you need to do is keep a receipt and give it our treasurer, Ben Folkinshteyn.

While I'm at it, I also want to thank our very generous, beautiful, sonorous and tireless prayer leaders: David Pasteelnik, Rebecca Milzoff, Baylene Wacks, Jonathan Schecter, Eva Stern, Asher Weiss, Ruth Weiss, Paul Fischer, Mara Raizer, Eric Post -- and a guest appearance by Warren Hoffman.

Community Announcements:

1) Due to a change in Facebook, we've been unable to send emails to people on our groups page. This has prompted us to move to a fan page and stop emailing repeat notes over Facebook. Many other minyans have dealt with this. If you have friends on the Facebook list, please have them join the Yahoo! email list so they can be sure to get our announcements. To do so they can email kolhakfar-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

2) The Steering Committee has been formed! We propose moving ahead by forming two important action groups: Budget/Fundraising and Shauvot Party Planning, and we'll also be meeting as a committee to discuss an important point in our by laws. All KhK folk who qualify to be voting members -- been attending services for over a year at least 50% of the time -- can join any time. Email us, and we'll put you to work! For those already on the list, please stay tuned for an email that proposes that we start these initiatives.

3) Purim class! The new rabbi at the Battery Park Synagogue -- Matt Carl -- is a long time friend of the minyan. He's running a class this Thursday in BPC about Purim. For all those curious to learn Torah in a traditional egalitarian setting, we highly encourage you to attend:

In other news, we had a great Kol haKfar meeting. Thanks to all who attended. We've formed an official Steering Committee. We have open enrollment for all voting members -- if you've been coming 50% of the time to minyan events year-to-date, then you're a voting member. The Steering Committee is responsible for setting larger minyan policy that affects all of us, fund raising and planning awesome events. All our welcome to join, and all will be held accountable for delivering the goods to the KhK community.

Right out the gate we're creating two action groups: 1) plan and produce a Shavuos party in a fun space downtown and 2) create a budget and apply for a UJA grant. We'll be meeting at least once a quarter, with the action groups (or whatever we decide to call them) meeting more frequently. For more info, please email us at kolhakfar@yahoo.com. We need your help and want your involvement.

Policy-wise, we decided that our public and private minimum kosher policies will be the same, meaning that we welcome non-hekshered vegetarian food at all KhK events, but we'll always have kosher as an option for wine and other relevant food/drink items, and we'll always only use kosher meat from kosher kitchens. Lastly, we'll be scheduling a follow up meeting with the Board to drill down about who qualifies for voting membership. Have an opinion, suggest or an idea? Please email us. This is a big week for Jews -- and for Kol haKfar in particular. It's Tu B'shvat, we meet tonight to plan for our first fund raising event, and we gather on Friday at Jennie and Ben Folkinshteyn's to celebrate Shabbat.

1) Fund raiser planning meeting tonight -- Kol haKfar hosts an evening of wine tasting, wonderful food, and winning conversation at Moore Brothers wine shop in April to raise funds for the minyan. 2) Tu B'shvat, the New Year of the Trees -- There are Tu B'shvat seders around the city, including a Hazon/Romemu event at the JCC, 334 Amsterdam, on Wed, January 19 at 7:30. Dear friends,

It's been a big year for Kol haKfar -- we've added more members, met more frequently and hosted more meals than ever. We also formed a Board of Trustees and incorporated as a non-profit religious organization -- for the first time after 8 years!

With this success have come growing pains. We have more people interested in attending our Friday nights meetings than can fit in a standard living room, yet we've lost some hosts as they've moved away. We also need to better communicate so we can organize meals, respond to RSVPs, schedule hosts and provide an events calendar.

How can we continue to be the same Kol haKfar we know and love, and also up our game to serve growing our needs? With your help, we'll get there.

Our immediate goal is to rent a loft downtown we can use for special Friday night occasions. A committee is now looking into options. The plan is to host a Friday night gathering at a homey, fun, lounge-like space as a test -- if we like it, then we can rent it on special occasions and give our generous hosts a needed break, and offer our hospitality to a larger crowd. Our second goal is to upgrade our web presence to make communications more useful for everyone.

We ask for your help by making a generous tax-deductible donation to Kol haKfar before year end. As a suggested scale, we recommend a donation from $36 to $360.

If you'd like to bring fruit or vegetables for a salad, please don't cut it up unless you have a kosher kitchen. Since we didn't get a host for this Friday, we're going to hold off on meeting again until October 15th. In the interim, we always encourage people to host Shabbat dinners and invite friends.

Kol haKfar -- the downtown egalitarian minyan -- gathers this Friday night 9/24 to celebrate Shabbat, and hopefully to say the brucha in a Sukkah nearby after we eat. Stay tuned for details. We'll be gathering at Chez Zachary's for davening and a dairy meal. Since it's a relatively cozy space, please RSVP to kolhakfar@yahoo.com and please indicate what you can bring. We'll have to cap attendance at 30.

Also, stay tuned for a community leadership meeting this fall once we are officially incorporated. We'll be looking to you -- yes you! -- to help develop ideas and directions for the minyan in this new year. The agenda includes (a) organizing a fund-raiser and membership drive, and discussing what needs to be funded, (b) discussing finding a larger space for gatherings (c) establish a hosting/welcoming group and (d) additional miscellaneous items, such as forming a social action group, or whatever else you bring to the table as an agenda point.

Kol haKfar meets next Friday at Zachary's place in the West Village; we're still trying to find a Sukkah to go to that evening, even if just to say the brucha. I have an idea, but if people can help locate a sukkah downtown, that would be excellent.

More importantly, we're in need of hosts for the next few months. Please volunteer your place if you have a living space that can squeeze about 30 people -- anywhere south of 34th street. Word is that if you host you earn special bonus points during the Days of Awe -- Yamim haNoraim. Just sayin'...

Dear Friends,

Thanks to all of you for making Kol haKfar a success in 5770. It's been a time of tremendous growth. In the past year we've taken the first steps towards incorporation and we are creating new leadership opportunities. We've welcomed many new members, enjoyed generous new hosts and listened to mellifluous new prayer leaders. We also remain incredibly thankful to the many committed members, open-hearted hosts and inspiring leaders who have been with us over the years, laying the groundwork for where we are today.

Our success is the product of all of our efforts, whether you show up a few times a year or join us twice each month. If you host the minyan in your home or bring tasty food to share; lead us in prayer or simply add your voice to the group; recruit new members or show up alone. We're grateful for all of your efforts.

We also remember the sad circumstances that have brought several people to the minyan over the years. We're honored to be able to support them in their time of mourning, and to learn from them how to endure profound loss. We send you our love and offer your our condolences.

For this new year I personally wish each of you a happy, healthy, prosperous and meaningful 5771. May we all have larger apartments, discover more downtown hot spots, find deeper meaning in Torah, continue to pray to God, share more communal meals, enhance our friendships, contribute to those less fortunate, walk the moral path -- and never stop evolving as individuals.

Thanks to Ben Stern for generously hosting Kol haKfar last Shabbat. All of our meals are expensive and time consuming to prepare; we're grateful for Ben's efforts.

Most importantly, I want to clarify the announcement I gave last Friday.

This board will create a bank account, raise funds and tackle other matters, like printing up more siddurim, looking into a space for holiday parties or even to eventually house the minyan. However... community participation will always be our hallmark. We will continue to have open, anyone-can-come meetings every so often for board members and non-board members alike to share their thoughts. And you can always contact me individually with suggestions or ideas.

If you'd like to be on the board, please keep reading:

Joining the board has legal implications you may need to clear with your employer, and it requires critical responsibilities like attending regular board meetings, helping raise funds, running the bank account, and other obligations requiring your time and energy.

There are two requirements to be considered eligible to join the Kol haKfar Board of Trustees:

1) You will need to attend an open meeting on August 23rd at 7:30pm at my apartment: 41 Grove St, 4B. Here we will decide who in the room is on the board, and will sign the documents
required to create the legal entity. If you cannot attend this meeting, you cannot be on the board -- unless there is some critical extenuating circumstance you have cleared with me well in advance.

2) You will need to have joined us for at least 50% of all gatherings in the past 12 months. This means showing up on average of once a month for the past year. It is important that the board consist of community members who have shown a sustained and frequent commitment to participating in the minyan. We do not take attendance; it's up to you if you feel like you meet this requirement.

If we have too many people who meet the requirements and want to join, we will have to whittle us down via a voting mechanism, asking people if they can truly commit to the responsibilities, or some other means of determining who should serve. A huge board that makes no decisions is not useful to anyone. We'll define this whittling down process if necessary.

For those who would like to join the board but haven't been with us for 12 months, or who haven't attended regularly in the past year, I respectfully ask for your patience. We will have elections in the future as we replace members and recruit new trustees. Please keep coming, and please stay active in the community.

You all know how I feel about this and most bureaucratic issues in general: True leadership isn't defined as a board membership. If you lead us in davening, if you host, if you contribute delicious items to our meals, and most importantly, if you show up to worship God and create community -- then you're a critical member of Kol haKfar. We all make this happen together.

If you meet our attendance requirement and would like to be considered to be on the Board, please attend the August 23rd meeting at 7:30pm at 41 Grove St 4B. Please also email me as soon as you can at kolhakfar@yahoo.com.

Kol haKfar, the most culinary of all minyanim, gathers this Friday night at Leora Singer's apartment for prayer and feasting. We're having a vegetarian/dairy dinner following teffilot, please bring food or drink to share. No heksher required if everything is vegetarian.

I know the sky is light until late, but we ask people to gather at 7pm so we can start (and end) at a reasonable time. Come early and join me for a cold beer on the balcony.

The parsha is Balak, which features more supernatural beings and talking animals than a Harry Potter movie. And some grisly results for inter-marriage too. Lesson learned: if you want to couple with a fetching Moabite, hide all sharp objects.

It's been an incredible eight years at Kol haKfar. We have inspiring lay-led prayer leadership by Asher, David, Eva, Benjamin, Jonathan and others; amazing hosts in Leora, Ben/Jennie, Benjamin/Ben, Jonathan/Malorie, Laura, Paul, Carrie and others; a welcoming and positive attitude to Jews across a wide spectrum of practice, sexuality, gender and origin; and of course, legendary gatherings for worship and celebration. All on Friday nights in downtown Manhattan, which lacks many resources available to Jews elsewhere.

We've truly created a community to take pride in. Apparently, others are proud of it too. As many have noticed, we're exceeding the limits of most living rooms. We'll be making a few changes to keep up with the times. (Feedback and constructive suggestions are needed and welcome.)

1) More meals: We're now offering meals with every gathering to try spread out spikes in attendance, and to have more fun. If you want to stay after services for the meal, please bring vegetarian food to share. If you're a host, please be willing to make or buy a simple main course to anchor the meal. Don't have time or cash? We can help coordinate shopping, bring food, or cook with you the night before -- and we're going to search for external funds to cover future hosting costs. We'll also be getting rid of RSVPs because it's too much to manage. Instead, we'll use the honor system. If you like eating, bring a side dish or dessert to share. As always, kashrut varies by host.

2) More money: A few helpful, smart, handsome friends are registering us as a religious organization so we can solicit tax-exempt funds. This means we'll need people to find money that's out there for groups like ours. We need your help. Please email us at kolhakfar@yahoo.com to volunteer your networking skills to find grants and angels. We don't need a lot.

3) More space: While we experiment with having meals every time, we also need to find a cheap, good-sized space we can use a few times a year for parties or gatherings when we have no hosts. Know of a space south of 34th Street that fits our lounge-core personality? Please let us know, or please start hunting for one. This alone will help us to continue to provide services to all.

Thanks to Leora Singer for hosting and cooking a delicious meal last Leil Shabbat, especially since it wasn't an official meal night. Also, special shout outs to Max Gross for the kosher wine tasting and to our newest member, Jared Weinstein, for bringing yet another bottle of scotch. It was a merry evening, never mind the orange vodka that showed up at some point.

Friday night is Tu B'Shevat. There are two options downtown. If people would like to gather as a Kol haKfar crew, post your plans to the Kol haKfar wall on Facebook. All events require tickets in advance.

Chabad of Soho -- I know nothing about this new Chabad, but it seems worth checking out. They have a fun sounding celebration with drinks following "short" services. Kiruv time!

Hey there, I'm back from an amazing week in Jerusalem to celebrate my brother's wedding. While it always depresses me to leave Israel, I look forward to seeing everyone this Friday December 4th to celebrate Shabbat and enjoy a vegetarian potluck meal at Benjamin and Ben's lovely spot in Murray Hill at 6:30pm.

A thought for the day: I just returned from a lovely wedding in Montreal. My friend, David, met his b'shert Sigalit at a Jewish "networking party" (read: cheesy singles event) in Boston. Sig had been going to those events for a while but decided she had had enough. Her girlfriends convinced her to go to just one more time, she let herself get talked into it and showed up. Ten minutes later she met my friend David. Eleven months later they were standing under a chuppah in her home town of Montreal. Not bad!

This has nothing to do with Kol haKfar per se, but I thought you'd enjoy the story.

We're in for a special Shabbat, which is also Shmini Atzeret. Ben and Jennie Folkinshteyn are treating the minyan to a kosher meat dinner at their lovely apartment after davening this Friday night. Please email us for more info.

They keep strictly kosher, so they ask guests to please only bring kosher wine, packaged hekshered parve desserts, un-cut fruit like berries or grapes, kosher challah or non-alcoholic drinks like seltzer or hekshered juice. Since they have limited space, we're keeping the guest list to 23 for the meal. If you'd like to attend, please RSVP to kolhakfar@yahoo.com by Wednesday evening (or until the list is full) and indicate what you can bring. Last thing: since it's a chag we ask people who have Art Scroll siddurim to bring a few extra copies. Our standard hand-outs are for non-chag Shabbats.

For a very long time Anya coordinated the scheduling of hosts for Kol haKfar, and she's decided to hand off the mantle after being a huge help. The minyan will have ameeting at Zachary's place to recruit a new scheduler, and to solicit more ideas and thoughts from minyan leaders as to what we can do to keep things running smoothly.

What does it take to be a leader? Show up at the meeting, have an interest in being a part of the team, and be willing to spend a modicum of time helping out. It doesn't take much to make a big difference.

3 - Purim starts Monday night. There are no shortage of fun activities around town, but if you'd like to show up en masse, here's what Kol haKfarnikim have done in the past:

Megillah reading Monday night
Go to the wacky, orthodox (separate seating) Charles Street Schul at the corner of Charles and West Fourth, probably at 5:30ish pm. Be in costume! There will be a very kosher reading of the megillah, tons of people in costume, and time to enjoy the lovely, old, idiosyncratic synagogue. It's seriously a fun and interseting evening. Then we'll schlep to the....

Party at Sixth Street Community Synagogue
This is where the downtown people party -- at a funky old orthodox schul with a large social space. There will be a huge band, drinks, etc until very, very late. It's $10 at the door with a costume, and you can pre buy tix online at eastvillageshul. com. It's at 325 E. 6th St between 1st and 2nd Aves. They'll probably have their own megillah reading too, so you could start your evening there.

We've had a lot of new members lately and we're excited by our new hosts Jennie and Ben! They've opened up their beautiful home to us in Murray Hill for davening and a gourmet kiddush this Friday. Please join us. As always, Kol haKfar (the "Voice of the Village") is a traditional, egalitarian minyan. We welcome everyone to join us.

Please note that our hosts keep a shomer Shabbat and kosher home. All this means is that if you could kindly bring an item for the kiddush, please makes sure it has a heksher -- a stamp on it that says it's kosher. Or just bring some fruit or kosher wine to keep it simple. We'll also supply some gourmet items to entice you uptown.

Since we're meeting in a new location we want to make sure we get a minyan. If you can RSVP (kolhakfar@yahoo.com) it helps us keep a head count.

We are meeting this Friday night in a very special location - Elizabeth Cate's amazing loft in Greenwich Village.
